Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Tires
A car tire inflated to 35 pounds per square inch (psi) can lose one psi every month or for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature change, so your car maintenance checklist should include checking tire pressure. Find the recommended level in the owner’s manual or on a sticker on the driver’s side door jamb. And don’t forget the spare.
Rotate tires every 6,000 miles to prevent uneven wear, replace them when they become worn and have the alignment checked if the car pulls to either side when driving or if you notice uneven tire wear.

Chrysler minivans on “best-buys” list
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
The Windsor-assembled 2013 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans were among five Chrysler Group vehicles named onto the “Best Buy” list compiled by Consumer Guide Automotive.Other Chrysler vehicles awarded the accolade include the Dodge Durango in the large crossover segment, Dodge Journey in the mid-size crossover category and Ram 1500 in the large pickup truck segment.
“We are honoured to have five of our vehicles, including three Dodge vehicles, recognized by Consumer Guide Automotive as Best Buys for 2013,” said Doug Betts, senior vice-president for quality at Chrysler Group. “These awards are proof that Chrysler Group creates cars, trucks, crossovers, minivans and SUVs that both customers and critics appreciate.”
A Consumer Guide Automotive Best Buy Award rating signifies that a vehicle is ranked at the top of its class and is strongly endorsed by the editors.
Consumer Guide Automotive editors analyse, compare and evaluate several vehicles by driving and extensively testing all major models in 19 vehicle categories. Those models that best fit the needs of the consumer are recognized with a “Best Buy” accolade.
Tom Appel, publisher of Consumer Guide Automotive, said Chrysler has come a long way toward improving the quality of its vehicles.
“The Chrysler Group turnaround has been a treat to watch,” said Appel. “In a few short years the company has made revolutionary gains in terms of drivetrain sophistication and materials, and assembly quality. Chrysler really feels like an all new entity.”

Introducing the New 2013 Town & Country S
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
Some people believe that if you drive a minivan, you can’t have style, and that to have style, you must drive something other than a minivan. At Chrysler, we disagree with both sides of that premise, now more than ever. Credit that to the latest addition to our vehicle lineup—the new 2013 Town & Country S.
Taking a cue from its Chrysler 300, 200, and 200 Convertible counterparts, Town & Country becomes the latest Chrysler vehicle to experience the “S” model makeover, a series of not-just-aesthetic changes that ratchet up the cool by a factor of 10. From badging to bezels, from performance to power, the new Town & Chrysler S is a sleek and stylish sight to behold. Features include:
- A black chrome grille combined with black-background Chrysler winged badges located both front and rear
- A black rear fascia step pad
- “S” model badging
- 17-inch aluminum wheels with polished face and black-painted pockets
- Blacked-out headlight bezels
- A monotone black interior unique to the Town & Country S
- Black Torino leather seats with an “S” logo embroidered in the seat-backs and black ballistic cloth seat inserts
- Piano Black gloss appliqués on the instrument panel and on the spokes of the black leather-wrapped steering wheel
- Black headliner and upper consoles, black center console, and an “S” logo in the instrument cluster
- Performance suspension that adds a new level of handling dynamics to the driving experience yet still provides a comfortable ride that’s expected in a luxury minivan
Official unveiling of the new Town & Country S happened just this week at the L.A. International Auto Show, where attendees had the chance to take in more than just the S model’s fit and finish. Also on display was the vehicle’s best-in-class entertainment system—a system, mind you, that is not relegated to the S alone, but one that can be found in the 2013 Town & Country Limited as well. Details are as follows:
- A minivan-segment exclusive Blu-ray™ DVD system featuring two rear screens
- Wireless headphones
- An HDMI input for high-def gaming
- Two USB ports for charging, RCA inputs, and 12v and 115v outlets
- System is capable of playing both standard DVDs and Blu-ray discs

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Engine oil
Checking and changing oil is critical to keep today’s engines running properly and efficiently. Follow manufacturer guidelines for changing the lubricant – generally, every 3,000 miles or three to six months.
Check the oil level with the engine off and the car parked on a level surface. Open the hood, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth or paper towel, then return it to the oil reservoir. Take it out again and see whether the level is within the acceptable range marked on the dipstick. If you add oil, don’t overfill, which can damage the engine.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Brakes and brake fluid
Check to ensure that brake fluid levels are within tolerance. How often you need to replace brake pads or other components depends on how you drive and typical driving conditions. Warning signs of a brake problem include noise, vibration or “grabbing” when you apply the brakes. Working on your brakes is a job probably best left to the professionals.

Maintenance Tip: Changing a Headlight
Changing the Headlight in a Newer Model Vehicle
In the old days, replacing a headlight seemed to be as complicated as a root canal. The lamp had to be completely removed. Today, cars and trucks come with headlight bulbs that plug into the back of the headlight lens housing. If your headlight goes out, replacing the bulb is simple and takes very little time--but it is a critical part of car maintenance and your safety.
What Type of Bulb?
First, find out what type of bulb you need. It may be listed in the owner's manual for your vehicle.
If you cannot locate the correct bulb information, ask the service clerk at the auto parts store. They have reference material and can find this information for you quickly.
Tools to Change a Newer Headlight Bulb
You'll need a few supplies in order to change a single or both headlights on your vehicle. Remember, if you are using a different type bulb for a burned-out headlight, you must place that same type bulb in the working headlight.
Here's what you need:
- The correct bulb for your vehicle's make, model and year.
- Service manual for your vehicle's make, model and year.
- Any tools required, as indicated in the service manual.
Changing the Newer Vehicle Headlight Bulb
Follow these steps to change the headlight bulb on your vehicle:
- Open the engine compartment hood.
- Locate the back of the headlight to determine the lamp and bulb type.
- Decide which bulb you need to replace.
- Purchase the correct bulb for your headlamp.
- Follow the directions in the service manual for the correct way to replace the bulb.
Changing the Headlight in an Older Model Vehicle
Older models are a bit trickier. First find the part number, which can usually be found as a raised impression on the front of the glass covering the headlamp. If it's not there, check the service manual, the owner's manual, or with the auto parts shop to buy the correct headlight.
Tools to Change an Older Headlight
To change out the whole headlight in an older vehicle:
- Correct lamp for the vehicle's make and model.
- Screwdriver to disconnect the frame holding the lamp in the bracket.
Changing the Older Vehicle Headlight
Follow these steps to change the headlight bulb on an older vehicle:
- Remove the screws that connect the headlamp frame to the bracket holding the headlamp. Make certain you turn only the screws that hold the lamp frame, not the adjusting screws.
- Disconnect the electrical connector in the back of the lamp by pulling the socket away from the headlamp with your hand.
- Remove the headlight from the bracelet area and discard it.
- Replace with the new headlight, making sure that it is positioned right side up.
- Plug the wire socket into the new headlight, which holding the headlight securely.
- Replace the headlight into the frame.
- Place the frame onto the headlight bracket.
- Reattach the screws to hold the frame and bracket in place.
- Do not adjust the setting screws for the direction the headlight shines.
If you suspect that the positioning of your new headlight may have been disturbed while you changed it, have it checked before you drive at night. Otherwise, you are ready to go.

Tired Tires
Tires wear out, but they also time out. The tire industry says tires are toast after five years, but they're selling tires. It all depends on heat, sunlight and ozone conditions. There's little argument from any pundits that after seven years those black donuts are dried and better off holding down a farmer's tarp than carrying your family around. If you're not sure how old your tires are, a tire shop can read the date code stamped into the sidewall.

Here's a news flash: It's much easier to avoid hitting things you can see. Simple as it is, that's the concept behind replacing your windshield wipers before they fossilize into noisy uselessness.
Fall is the ideal wiper replacement time: after the blade-baking summer and before the fall and winter nastiness. Depending on location, wiper replacement may be an annual affair in the Southwest to a biannual chore in northern climes.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
"If some is good, more is better" thinking does not apply to octane. Here the rule is to supply whatever octane the engine is rated for and call it done. Higher-than-required octane does not yield more power or mileage, only oil company profits.
Some engines are rated for premium 91 octane fuel but can burn 87 octane regular, thanks to the magic of knock sensors. In that case, run regular gas if puttering around surface streets, and premium fuel if full-throttle driving is part of your daily repertoire.

2012 Chrysler 300S V6 AWD Review
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
Last year the Chrysler 300 got a complete makeover, and this year the 2012 model still received some significant changes. There are some new models that have joined the lineup. A sporty Chrysler 300S that we’ll be reviewing this week, the new Chrysler 300C Luxury Series, and a new Chrysler 300 SRT8 super-sedan. The Chrysler 300S is a sportier 300, and comes with extras like 20-inch wheels and a firmer suspension.
The Chrysler 300 is a full-size four-door sedan that is comfortable, quiet and a cruiser. It can be ordered with a V6 or V8 powerplant and comes with an optional eight-speed automatic. The Chrysler 300 is one of just a few rear-wheel-drive sedans that can be purchased for less than $35,000 making it a good choice for driving enthusiasts.
Chrysler 300S gets visual exterior treatments
Outside, the 300S receives a number of visiual treatments that set it apart from the standard version. The S gets a gloss-black grille and headlight housings framed against monochrome bodywork. The 300S looks a little more menacing as it also comes with large dark wheels and the S just looks more aggressive. Chrysler would like it to compete with the Cadillac CTS-V and it could be a poor man’s version of the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class.
The sedan is big and the driver can feel it the moment he or she sits behind the wheel. Interior dimensions and roominess are generous in the front and rear of the cabin. The 300S also has a luxury feel to it. The thick leather-wrapped four-spoke padded steering wheel offers an immediate luxury experience. On the S model, magnesium paddle shifters rise behind the horizontal spokes letting the driver know this a sport model and meant for spirited driving.
A luxury cabin
This S tester also came with Radar Red luxury-leather bucket seats with the S logo added for visual flare. The materials in the cabin are first rate and the S interior feels sporty. The driver’s seat offers plenty of adjustability and the tilt-telescoping steering wheel makes it easy to find a comfortable seating position. The S model comes with a number of standard luxury features and offers even more optional goodies.
This 2012 Chrysler 300S AWD tester comes with a V6 and 8-speed automatic transmission ($35,820) The S model gets body-color trim with gloss-black grille and headlight trim, matte carbon and piano-black cabin trim, 300S logo on the leather seats, and keyless entry with remote start.
300S options include UConnect with 8.4-inch touch screen, Garmin navigation, Sirius Travel Link with Real Time Traffic and Sirius satellite radio ($795). the large, 8.4-inch screen is easily understood at a glance and easy to operate. Other available options include a Safety Tech package ($2,420) and also a Luxury package ($3,250).
An award-winning powertrain
The standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 is an award winning engine. It comes with double overhead cams, 24 valves, and variable valve timing that aids flexibility and good fuel economy. The V6 produces 292 horsepower and 260 lb ft of torque. The 3.6-liter powerplant is high-revving and delivers strong acceleration.
The Pentastar V6 is mated to a new highly efficient eight-speed automatic with E-Shifter. The automatic achieves improved fuel-mileage because it allows easier acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. The V6 with AWD achieves 18/27 city/highway fuel mileage which is the same as the rear-drive with the five-speed automatic. At 50 mph, the 300 eight-speed will cruise all day long at just 1000 rpm’s allowing moderate interstate cruising using minimal fuel.
The 2012 Chrysler 300 with the eight-speed also gets a new shifter. It has four positions (PRND) and a +/- gate to the side for manual operation. The new shifter could be a weak point for the big sedan. The short stubby shifter looks like an inverted silver putter. The unit is actually an electronic switch and needs to be pushed properly to find the right gear. It’s easy to get the wrong gear and can be a bit confusing and it definitely takes getting used to.
Smooth and comfortable on the road
Driving the big 300S sedan feels much like driving a more expensive German luxury sedan. The 300S is smooth and comfortable, but if you need the power, the V6 has ample power to move all that weight with confidence. The four-door S is not a sports sedan, but the sport suspension offers enough stiffness to give it a sporty feel. Body roll is acceptable when taking tight corners, and the electric-assist steering has good weighting and feel.
The available All-wheel drive is worth the extra cost and gives the sedan better stability in either wet or dry conditions. The ride height on 2012 Chrysler 300 AWD models is slightly lower than on 2011 models giving it a sleeker profile.
Overall, the 2012 Chrysler 300S V6 AWD is a roomy car that offers comfort, all-wheel-drive capability, enough power for most situations and has a unique presence. At $35,820, it offers a good value.

Chrysler Town & Country: The Envy of Tailgate Parties Everywhere
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
It used to be that the minivan mostly symbolized trips to the grocery store and the kids’ soccer practice. These days, and thanks to an ever-increasing availability of cool new features, the Chrysler Town & Country in particular is so much more than that. With a little imagination it can be, well, just about anything you want, even the envy of your alumni football tailgate parties.
Hear us out now. The same features that make Town & Country an excellent choice for families will also make any tailgating experience more enjoyable. With seating for seven, for example, you can pick up six of your best friends and still have enough cargo room to pack a smorgasbord of essential tailgate party foods.
Also, with the available Uconnect Web, your minivan can be transformed into an Internet “hot spot,” granting Wi-Fi access to any compatible device. That means you can check all the latest scores or set the lineup for your fantasy football team anywhere within range, be it from a lawn chair stationed just outside the rear hatch, or from the luxurious second-row captain’s seating that comes standard with the Touring L and Limited models.
Now, none of this tailgating business is meant to detract from Town & Country’s overall ability to impress as a practical family vehicle—thanks to innovations like the industry-exclusive Stow ‘n Go® Seating and the 42-feature SafetyTec Package, our minivan remains an excellent choice for families. Just consider this a friendly reminder for all you football fans: A new season is upon us, and it’s a great time to keep in mind the other potential uses of the Chrysler Town & Country.

2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Altitude Edition, Automobile Magazine, Sept. 14
As a former 1988 Jeep Wrangler owner, it's amazing to me how far this model has come, an Automobile magazine review said. For 2012, Jeep offers soft-touch plastics, an engine that delivers both (relatively) impressive acceleration and fuel economy, and an interior I'd be a little afraid to get wet, the article said. Wranglers now offer four doors and a quiet enough interior to be considered as a daily driver for a small family, the publication said.
Climb up and into the Wrangler Unlimited Altitude, and it's clear that this is not the barebones Jeep Wrangler of old, the reviewer wrote. It has all the modern conveniences—leather seats, a tilt steering wheel, an optional navigation system, and USB and Bluetooth connectivity—and yet it still has the off-road capability of its predecessors, Automobile said. Unlike the Wranglers of yore, in which you were forced to compromise comfort and usability for the fun of off-roading prowess and open-air motoring, this new Wrangler is a vehicle you could easily live with every day, the story said

Chrysler and fashion designer John Varvatos team up for special edition 300 sedans
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
Chrysler and John Varvatos, two award-winning entities with strong ties to the city of Detroit, have teamed up to create a pair of bespoke luxury sedans that showcase what can happen when the automotive world meets the fashion industry. The 2013 Chrysler 300C John Varvatos Limited Edition and Luxury Edition will both bring a new level of exclusivity to this stylish, full-size sedan. Varvatos' self-named menswear fashion brand, John Varvatos, has a raw industrial look, but the designer is also heavily infused with the rock 'n' roll scene from his early interest in fashion to his involvement with the VH1 Save the Music Foundation where he is a board member. This mix of industry and rock 'n' roll can easily be seen in the new 300C models. Each car will get a slightly different look and feel with the 300C John Varvatos Limited Edition coming in an exclusive Phantom Black tri-coat paint job as the basis of the car's dark and sinister appearance. All of the 300's regular bright chrome trim has been replaced by dark titanium accents (on the grille surround, daylight opening trim and the dual exhaust outlets) or black chrome on the front grille. Dark 20-inch, multi-spoke wheels and smoked LED taillight lenses finish off the eye-catching styling, and even Chrysler's signature wing badge has been darkened to match the rest of the exterior. The 300C Luxury Edition gets slightly different look with a platinum chrome mesh grille and polished wheels. The 300C's fashion makeover gets even more intense inside. Looking like it came right off a John Varvatos runway, the Limited Edition gets features like the pewter metallic leather seats with exclusive Diesel Gray and black stitching to match one of Varvatos' leather jackets. Also, the instrument panel clock and gauge cluster has been redesigned to match the brand's watch design including what should be a stunning pearlescent white face with black bezels. The Luxury Edition's cabin steps things up even more with two color options for the Nappa leather seats and hand-sanded, matte-finished Natural Pore Mocha real wood accents. Both cars come with Chrylser's 8.4-inch UConnect system with a distinct "John Varvatos" screen display. Chrysler has yet to announce the pricing or availability for either of these models, but it did say that the Limited Edition would in fact be produced in limited numbers. Despite carrying the 300C name, the Limited Edition and Luxury Edition versions of this car will be available with both V6 and V8 engines as well as optional all-wheel drive. Up until this car, the 300C nameplate was used solely to distinguish cars equipped with the Hemi V8.

Alpine and Vapor | 2013 Jeep® Grand Cherokee SRT8 Special Editions
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
Performance
Powering the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 with Fuel Saver Technology that delivers 470 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. The SRT8 delivers fuel efficiency and an extended range of 450 miles on one tank of gas, with blazing standing starts and improved straight-line performance.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the best-handling Jeep vehicle ever, with its SRT-tuned, adaptive damping suspension managed by the Jeep Selec-Track system, which interacts with different systems to tune the dynamics of the vehicle. Choose among five dynamic modes for specific driving conditions.
Capability
It’s not a Jeep vehicle if it’s not capable. The standard Jeep Quadra-Trac SRT active on-demand four-wheel-drive transfer case does a few things. It uses sensor input to take corrective action at the earliest detection of tire slip, allowing the Jeep 4×4 system to transfer up to 100% of available torque to one rear wheel. The transfer case also enhances handling by proportioning torque between the front and rear axles.
Other features include five-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels and a trailer tow rating of 5,000 lbs.
Luxury
Building off of the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s refined, luxurious interior, the SRT8 interior features race-inspired technology and SRT-exclusive appointments. Drivers assume the role of racer with a leather-wrapped steering wheel with a satin chrome rim section and paddle-shift controls on both sides. Nappa leather and suede seats, sculpted bolsters, and contrast stitching enhance the race-inspired luxury.
Drivers receive instant feedback thanks to the SRT-exclusive Performance Pages, showing horsepower, torque, 0-60 time, G-forces, expanded engine information, and more.
The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the most powerful Jeep vehicle ever, the best-performing Jeep vehicle ever, and the best-handling Jeep vehicle ever. It comes with standard luxury, race-inspired appointments, and exclusive SRT features. And with the new Alpine and Vapor special edition models, the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 truly is The Ultimate Performance SUV.
